1. What do you find most interesting about what he says on these pages? What stands out as particularly useful to you as a storyteller?
What I found was that stories should have some natural sound and that it is good to have natural sound it enhances the story. Also I found interesting was you should have soundbites that give that lump in your throat. They should make you happy, sad and or mad. But they should become a memory to the audience. pictures should come in a story to give you an idea of what to write about
2. What is the name of the story, and on what date did it first air?
3. List and describe four instances of natural sound.
4. List and describe (including the type and what they are showing) four camera shots that you find interesting.
5. Write a possible focus statement for the story (strong verbs; no “-ing” words)
6. How does this story utilize Dotson’s “Building Blocks” (from Page 68)? Discuss a few of them, please.
This story uses a lot of natural sound. Showing the racers emotions by hearing the cheering and laughing in the background.
Also there was some silence involved when a lady was telling the story of her mom and the lady began to cry and felt very emotional. That silence made sure to capture the emotions the lady was feeling and she was able to let them out by having that silence. Also graphics were shown. Pictures of people who of died of breast cancer in the hospital or people that have survived and where they are now.

Story title: Disappearing jobs: video store closes shop
Total Run Time: 2:58
Shots:
Overall this story was good in showing the message. A lot of pattern was showing the customer shopping for videos and showing the videos. Also they showed a lot of people buying the videos especially with stacks of them. Something I would change about this story is the interviews. They did not really give the person a lot of talking space. The person was more in the middle of the shot. The stragies they used were showing how much the customers loved shopping at the video store. They showed the customers buying and buying videos. Also the signs really told how much the videos were bought because the prices went down and there was still a lot of people buying.
Total Run Time: 2:58
Shots:
- Angle shot: Sign of the store
- Wide shot: inside of the store
- Medium shot: guy sorting the video games
- Medium shot: interview of guy
- Angle shot: outside of store
- Angle shot: of the video cases
- medium shot: customer looking at games
- Tight shot: the movies
- Tight shot: DVD rentals sign
- Linking shot: customer lookinf at videos then grabbing them
- Angle shot: open sign
- Medium shot: guy ringing up items
- depth shot: guy lookng at videos
- Wide shot: cases of video
- medium shot: customer purchasing video
- Depth shot: Customer looking at videos
- Medium shot: customer talker with worker
- low shot: showing the customer with stacks of video
- Angle shot: showing DVDs $2.50 sale
- Wide shot: outside of store showing the lights going off

Make it Memorable #2
One thing I found interesting about the reading is how you want to make your news story interesting enough that viewers at home do not want to change the channel. Another thing i found interesting is that you want to use at active voice and not bore your audience to death. You want to make sure it is energetic enough that the viewers are engaged. Finally the last thing i found interesting is it is good to have surprises in your stories to keep the viewer watching and wanting to know what is going to happen. Something that I disagree with is being conversation
I personally feel that's awkward and I do not really think people want to see that.
I think in the story about the twin boys it had a lot of conversations. A lot with the dad and how the boys felt during the event. It really showed what was going on and it gave a mental picture of what was happening. Another aspect used was action voice it really had a tone that made you want to keep reading the article and wanting to know what was going to happen next. Final aspect used in my opinion is surprises, it showed how the boys got the money for winning the shot, but how later it surprised me that they wanted to give the money back to the organization.
For the news story about the football players is had the aspect of how to defeat the TV remote control. It had you engaged and made you want to keep watching. It was interesting how they started with why the mom was crying which lead you to keep watching. Another aspect is the active voice. The reporter was able to have a active voice and make things sound interesting and make you want to keep watching. He had a sense of humor that en-lighted the story. Final aspect is surprises you would of never imagined the women had 12 kids and all of them were boys, and play football. I could not believe it my self. Especially since each one of them played football at the same school from first born to last born.
Stand ups
1. What is the lead in this story? Does it intrigue you to keep watching?
Something strange could happen in a quiet neighborhood
2. What are the 5W's of this story: Who, What, Where, When, Why
Who: Neighborhood
What: Someone broke into her house through dog door
Where: A quiet neighborhood, 31st and juilian
When: about 2 weeks
Why: To rob and steel things
3. Give an example of the reporters Voice over or seque (Write it down word for word)
When the house is being shown in the begining he is talking. When anything is being showed like the dog door he is being voiced over.
4. When do we see the reporter's stand-up? Beginning, Middle, or End?
Towards the end
5. What is the purpose of this reporter's stand-up?Showing that he is moving to another spot.
Stand up
- Move story forward
- reporter becomes B-roll
- take me to the scene
- use props
- be creative and surprise us

Make It Memorable by Bob Dotson
1. What do you notice about the way he writes? Use specific examples, please. (75 words)
I noticed that he adds in a bit of humor in his writing to entertain the reader. Also he is straight about what he is talking about. He does not confuse the reader in his writing. It is a very easy read. you can understand everything. And he uses great detail and visual detail to explain what he wants.
2. What did you learn from reading pages 9 to 27? (75 words)
I learned you have to remember the rules of three which is when interviewing frist of they tell you want you want to hear. Second they explain their answer and third they blurt out a sound bite. I also learned that silence is okay it makes the person unccomfortable that the continue to talk and that is when you get the most out of an interview. Finally I learned non- questions and questions where you ask question and you also answer them as the person is talking.
3. With the scripts: What do suppose is described in each column? Why would it be split like that? What else is interesting about the scripts? (50 words)
One the side of the scripts is what each shot is going to take place and also what will be in the footage. I think it is spilt like that to show how long each thing is before moving to the next thing. To give you different shots of everything. I think it is interesting that they have that to guide them as they film and interview. It really comes in handy when you are interview. And also that they have a varity of things like showing pictures, talking to different people. It is all different and moves smoothly.
4.On Page 34 (and to the end of the section), Dotson writes about a long-form feature. Find one of these (a story at least 4 minutes long) on a TV news magazine such as Rock Center, 20/20 or 60 Minutes. Then, give and explain examples of how the storyteller uses the five bulleted traits Dotson gives on Page 34. (200 words)
- Scene ~In the scene it takes place in California. They way they show it is by doing a wide shot of the new reporter infront of the beach. They set the scence by explaining what happened. The shots consited of pictures of the wowmen and the family

Classmate Story : Work hard and have fun
Many of us have experienced times where we cannot take it anymore,
so we give up and not continue on. Not for Anna Schoonover she has always lived
to her motto work hard and have fun. The way she got this motto is from her
dad. She always tries to keep in mind to
never give up. Anna has used it in many
ways, but the one that stood out the most is when she is playing lacrosse. Lacrosse
can be a tiring sport where it gets the point you do not want to continue. Anna once was at her lacrosse game and she
was playing hard. Then it got to the point where she could not continue. But
she remembered what he dad said work hard and have fun. Anna states “I always try to remember it and
keep it in mind when it get She tries her best to not give up and continue in
what she is doing, but most important she remembers to have fun. We should all find that motto in life, so no
matter what we need to work hard and remember to have fun.
